vim - gvim (version 7.4.52 and 7.4.622) doesn't refresh properly on Ubuntu (14.04 LTS)

The problem is happening on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS running Unity desktop under vmware on Windows 7 host.

My gvim is sometimes not refreshing its display unless I force it to using Ctrl+L. For example, when I go to the top of a file and insert a line, the line gets inserted but the display doesn't refresh. Unfortunately, I am not able to get a screenshot because when I press the PrintScr key, the display refreshes itself.

My current installation maps gvim command to vim.gnome from the vim-gnome package, but I had the same problem with vim-gtk package as well. These were versions 7.4.52. I then compiled vim from source (version 7.4.622), and still have the same problem.

Does anyone have any idea how to troubleshoot this? What could be wrong? Please ask for any details you need - not a guru here!

gvim --version gives:
